Methods for Solving Extremal Problems in Practice
نویسنده
چکیده
During the 20th century there has been an incredible progress in solving theoretically hard problems in practice. One of the most prominent examples is the DPLL algorithm and its derivatives to solve the Boolean satisfiability problem, which can handle instances with millions of variables and clauses in reasonable time, notwithstanding the theoretical difficulty of solving the problem. Despite this progress, there are classes of problems that contain especially hard instances, which have remained open for decades despite their relative small size. One such class is the class of extremal problems, which typically involve finding a combinatorial object under some constraints (e.g, the search for Ramsey numbers). In recent years, a number of specialized methods have emerged to tackle extremal problems. Most of these methods are applied to a specific problem, despite the fact there is a great deal in common between different problems. Following a meticulous examination of these methods, we would like to extend them to handle general extremal problems. Further more, we would like to offer ways to exploit the general structure of extremal problems in order to develop constraints and symmetry breaking techniques which will, hopefully, improve existing tools. The latter point is of immense importance in the context of extremal problems, which often hamper existing tools when there is a great deal of symmetry in the search space, or when not enough is known of the problem structure. For example, if a graph is a solution to a problem instance, in many cases any isomorphic graph will also be a solution. In such cases, existing methods can usually be applied only if the model excludes symmetries. 1998 ACM Subject Classification D.3.2 Language Classifications

A new solving approach for fuzzy multi-objective programming problem in uncertainty conditions by using semi-infinite linear programing
In practice, there are many problems which decision parameters are fuzzy numbers, and some kind of this problems are formulated as either possibilitic programming or multi-objective programming methods. In this paper, we consider a multi-objective programming problem with fuzzy data in constraints and introduce a new approach for solving these problems base on a combination of the multi-objecti...
متن کاملChain hexagonal cacti: extremal with respect to the eccentric connectivity index
In this paper we present explicit formulas for the eccentric connectivity index of three classes of chain hexagonal cacti. Further, it is shown that the extremal chain hexagonal cacti with respect to the eccentric connectivity index belong to one of the considered types. Some open problems and possible directions of further research are mentioned in the concluding section.
متن کاملExtremal Positive Solutions For The Distributed Order Fractional Hybrid Differential Equations
In this article, we prove the existence of extremal positive solution for the distributed order fractional hybrid differential equation$$int_{0}^{1}b(q)D^{q}[frac{x(t)}{f(t,x(t))}]dq=g(t,x(t)),$$using a fixed point theorem in the Banach algebras. This proof is given in two cases of the continuous and discontinuous function $g$, under the generalized Lipschitz and Caratheodory conditions.
متن کاملOn the Behaviour of Extremal Optimisation When Solving Problems with Hidden Dynamics
Solving dynamic combinatorial problems poses a particular challenge to optimisation algorithms. Optimising a problem that does not notify the solver when a change has been made is very difficult for most well-known algorithms. Extremal Optimisation is a recent addition to the group of biologically inspired optimisation algorithms. Due to its extremely simple functionality, it is likely that the...
متن کاملProviding a Method for Solving Interval Linear Multi-Objective Problems Based on the Goal Programming Approach
Most research has focused on multi-objective issues in its definitive form, with decision-making coefficients and variables assumed to be objective and constraint functions. In fact, due to inaccurate and ambiguous information, it is difficult to accurately identify the values of the coefficients and variables. Interval arithmetic is appropriate for describing and solving uncertainty and inaccu...
